Warrants Issued for Known Sex Offender in New Criminal Sexual Penetration Case

San Juan County, NM - On August 31, 2013, San Juan County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives responded to the Thriftway in Aztec, NM.  The call was in reference to a report of Criminal Sexual Penetration.  During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that Peter Andrew Ernst, age 26, had been drinking with a friend of his girlfriend.

Ernst then followed her into a room where he raped her.  “We learned that after the incident, Ernst quit his job and fled to Navajo, New Mexico,” explained SJC Sheriff’s Office Detective’s Sergeant Kyle Lincoln.

Ernst“We also learned that Ernst had been convicted of a previous rape in the military and is a registered sex offender in Arizona,” continued Lincoln.  Detectives discovered that Ernst last registered as a Sex Offender with Maricopa County, Arizona, in 2012.

“He did not notify Arizona of his move to San Juan County, New Mexico nor did he register with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office,” said Deputy Robert Tallman of the SJC Sex Offender Unit.  “Detectives discovered that Ernst has currently been living in the San Juan County area for the past year.”  A warrant has been issued for Ernst’s arrest on the charges of:

  • 1 count, Kidnapping (to inflict death, physical injury or a sexual offense on the victim – (1st degree felony)
  • 5 counts, Criminal sexual penetration (3rd degree felony)
  • 1 count, Assault with intent to commit a violent felony (3rd degree felony)
  • 1 count, Aggravated battery (3rd degree felony)
  • 1 count, Assault with intent to commit a violent felony (3rd degree felony)

The bond for these charges was set at $100,000.00.

An additional warrant was issued for Ernst today (September 4, 2013).  This warrant is for the  charge of:

  • Failure to register as a sex offender.

The bond for this second warrant was also set at $100,000.00.
