The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Volunteers In Partnership Program is made up of citizen Law Enforcement volunteers who make a difference by donating their time and energy to assist the Sheriff’s Office and our community in a variety of ways. The Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking individuals interested in filling volunteer leadership roles within the program.

- INTERNS:
- Various internships are available each semester, depending on need
- CHAPLAIN:
- Provide comfort, counseling and spiritual guidance to all Sheriff’s Office members, sworn and civilian, and members of their families upon request. Respond to assist during times of tragedy, such as serious injuries, accidental and natural death, homicides and suicides. Provide words of inspiration, comfort, prayer, invocations, benedictions, at Sheriff’s Office functions. Counsel with members of the community when there is a request for such counsel. Make death notifications.
- COURT WATCH OBSERVER:
- It is easy and convenient to be a volunteer Court Watcher. You can go as often or little as you wish. You will meet new people and have an opportunity to see how the court system works. You don’t even need to commit to a whole day. There are morning and afternoon sessions. You would observe court for 3-4 hours once or twice a month – the schedule is flexible.
- DETECTIVES DATA ENTRY CLERK:
- Volunteer will assist Detectives with data entry, as well filing and scanning
- DETECTIVES INVESTIGATIVE ASSISTANT:
- Volunteer will place phone calls on cases as required to determine if new leads are available, will take detailed notes and pass on any information on leads or other information received to Detectives and update criminal file in system
- EXPLORER SQUAD LEADER:
- Introduces young adults to careers in Law Enforcement. While in the program Explorers are taught the various aspects of both fields and how to deal with responsibilities in order to prepare them for a career in the field of law enforcement.
- L.E.F.L.I. (Law Enforcement Foreign Language Interpreters):
- Volunteers will serve as interpreters for staff/detectives The scheduling, training and leadership of LEFLI will be tl1e responsibility of the LEFLI Squad Leader. The position requires some assigned standing shifts, as well as, being scheduled “on call” via pager or phone.
- LOBBY RECEPTIONIST:
- Volunteer serve as receptionist at the front lobby desk as needed
- SHERIFF’S OFFICE NEIGHBORHOOD AWARENESS QUADRANT LIASON:
- Volunteer will direct the activities of Neighborhood Watch program in a quadrant of the County
- PHOTOGRAPHER/VIDEOGRAPHER:
- Volunteer will take photos/videos of volunteers for bulletin board, marketing and promotional pieces, as well as other projects as needed
- COMMUNITY OUTREACH ASSISTANT:
- Volunteer will write stories for Newsletter and assist Community Relations Coordinator with promoting the Volunteers In Partnership, Neighborhood Watch Program, and other assignments
- RANGE ASSISTANT:
- Volunteer will assist with mechanical and technical aspects of firearms training
- RECORDS ASSISTANT:
- Volunteer will assist with filing, data entry, scanning documents, posting dispositions, etc
- RECORDS MAIL RUNNER:
- Volunteer will report to Aztec Sheriff’s Office and assist with processing of paperwork. Mail run may include delivering paperwork to area courts; Kirtland Substation; Lee Acres Substation; Detectives Division and other areas as needed.
- RESERVE DEPUTY:
- The San Juan County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy is a non-paid community service position that performs an essential role within the Sheriff’s Office. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy Program is comprised of volunteers throughout San Juan County as well as organized, officered and manned pursuant to and under the direction of the Sheriff of San Juan County.
- SPECIAL PROJECT ASSISTANT:
- Volunteer will assist with special projects and events, such as County Fair McGruff, conference registration, and crime prevention booths
- SUPPLY EQUIPMENT MANAGER-MAIN OR SUBSTATION:
- Volunteer will ensure that all necessary equipment and supplies are available, i.e. patrol cars equipped with blankets, first aid kit, flares, etc, & fuel
- SUPPORT SERVICES VIDEO TECH:
- Volunteer will watch and download videos requested by outside agencies, then log all video requests.
- TOUR GUIDES:
- Volunteer will conduct tours of Sheriff’s Office (main and substations)
- TRAINING CLERICAL ASSISTANT:
- Volunteer will assist with clerical work in the Training Section of the Sheriff’s Office. General Office Organization, Filing, Data Entry and other assignments as needed.
- VICTIM ADVOCATE:
- Volunteer assists violent crime victims with short-term crisis intervention. Provides referrals for victims’ compensation and counseling. Informs victims of case status, victim rights and property return assistance. Ensures the rights and needs of victims are addressed by department personnel. Attends victim/law enforcement groups on behalf of Sheriff’s Office.
- VOLUNTEERS IN PARTNERSHIP NEWSLETTER EDITOR:
- Volunteer will create and publish monthly newsletter for members of Volunteers In Partnership program
- VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR:
- Volunteer will assist Community Relations Coordinator in various volunteer management functions, especially special projects and events and promotional items
- VOLUNTEERS IN PARTNERSHIP RECORDS MGR:
- Volunteer will enter each volunteer’s hours in the computer each month and provide a summary report, as well as maintain other records and provide other statistical reports
- VOLUNTEERS IN PARTNERSHIP:
- Volunteer will perform general office duties for Community Relations Coordinator
- VOLUNTEERS IN PARTNERSHIP EVALUATION SPECIALIST:
- Volunteer will track volunteer evaluations and send notices to appropriate supervisors
- WARRANT DETAIL ADMIN. ASSISTANT:
- Volunteer will process and organize incoming and outgoing criminal warrants
