Internship Program

Our internship program provides the criminal justice and or social work student with a hands-on introduction to the diverse and fascinating aspects of a local law enforcement agency within San Juan County. The student works closely with sworn deputies and detectives in every department within the Sheriff’s Office. He or she will be afforded valuable experience and insight into every step of a criminal investigation.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  An unpaid internship with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office allows students to get professional experience, typically while obtaining credit for school.  If you are a student, please see your Department Internship Advisor for details on how to register for the credits.

There are currently TWO openings for internships available with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

Website Design Internship

Position Description

The intern will assist with updating and maintaining the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office website.   Develop and implement a plan to attract more people to our website. Develop and implement a plan to use the most popular pages on our website (arrests & warrants) to share information. Develop and implement new features to be added to www.sjcso.com.  Intern will also assist with updating and maintaining the Sheriff’s Office social media sites (Facebook, Twitter).

This is a great opportunity for strengthening a resume with a professional, highly visible website.  Research website designs and will provide samples to the Sheriff’s Office  for implementation. If a new design is selected, the intern will create a new Sheriff’s Office website and will be responsible for content development and daily updates.  This is an unpaid internship.

 Essential Functions

•  Basic webpage layout and design
• Social Media Administration
•  Administer website and social media pages
• Manage and implement calendars
• Update content as required
• Analyze and develop online marketing strategies using keywords, search engine optimization, social networking and analytics.
•  Assists with administrative duties including fax processing, sorting, collating, stuffing envelopes, mailings and other administrative functions as assigned.

Qualifications

•  Highly motivated and passionate about technology, creativity and innovation.
• Experience and enthusiasm navigating social networking platforms, websites and other online communities.
• Preferred qualifications include an information technology, web design, or related educational background, strong computer skills, and an individual the ability to work well independently.
• Skills and knowledge of website design and Word Press needed.

Hours: Part Time: 10-20 hours/week.
Direct Supervisor: Community Relations Coordinator
Salary: Unpaid.
Time Period: Dates are flexible.

Expectations

• Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times and exhibit a high quality of competence in carrying out duties.
• Work on multiple projects at one time, maintaining flexibility and patience in balancing work assignments.
• Exhibit willingness to work as part of team.
• One semester commitment is required.

Preference will be given to those candidates who are at least an undergraduate junior or who meet requirements through his or her college or university to be eligible for academic credit. Graphic Design & Media Internship

Position Description

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is looking to strengthen their marketing materials and increase its presence in social media and the web. This includes enhancing our program’s branding, creating new graphics to promote the Sheriff’s Office divisions and programs, developing promotional videos and animations, creating a newsletter for print and web distribution, and more. This is an unpaid internship.

Essential Functions

Specific Design related requirements include:

• Drafts basic public relations materials including news releases, media alerts, fact sheets and other materials as directed.
• Ad and brochure layout
• Carries out special and media event planning activities and arrangements as outlined by the Community Relations Coordinator or Command Staff.
• Create newsletter (print & website format)
• Proficiency in Photoshop
• Experience with InDesign
• Content Development
• Work with Sheriff’s Office staff to determine information needs
• Draft, edit, and review promotional content as required
• Work with targeted organizations to gather feedback, build content, and determine need.
• Assists with administrative duties including fax processing, sorting, collating, stuffing envelopes, mailings and other administrative functions as assigned.

Qualifications

• Highly motivated and passionate about technology, creativity and innovation
• An individual the ability to work well independently.
• Strong design skills. Proficiency in Adobe Suite CS4 (Specifically: Photoshop & InDesign).
• Strong writing skills.
• Highly organized, high level of attention to detail.
• Positive attitude, ability to work in teams.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
