Ref: Update to Reported Shooting that Occurred 05/15/2013
San Juan County, NM - On 5/15/13 at approximately 1500 hours, San Juan County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a call of a reported shooting. Deputies and detectives responded to the area of Crouch Mesa IN Farmington, NM.
During the course of the investigation into the incident, deputies and detectives determined that four adult males had been working on a truck. At the same time, they were also “messing around” with two .45 caliber pistols.
As Alec Thomas, age 35 of Farmington, handled one of the pistols he accidentally shot one of the males in the leg. Andrew Kvech, age 42 of Farmington, was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center with severe, but non-life threatening injuries to his lower right leg. Kvech was reported to have been later flown to a hospital in Albuquerque for treatment.
“As deputies first arrived on-scene they intercepted Thomas leaving the property in his vehicle,” explained Lieutenant Cory Tanner. “During interviews with deputies he informed them that he had ‘inadvertently’ shot his friend, and that he was a felon.”
Deputies located one full firearm, and a second that was disassembled with parts missing. The other males on-scene explained that after the shooting Thomas had “gone into the residence for a moment then left in his vehicle”. “It was then that deputies intercepted him,” explained Tanner.
Thomas was arrested and booked into the San Juan County Detention Center. He was charged with:
- Felon in Possession of a Firearm
- Tampering with evidence
- and Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon.
