January 28, 2014
For Immediate Release
ACTIVE SHOOTING DRILL TO BE HELD AT SAN JUAN COUNTY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING
SAN JUAN COUNTY, NM – The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department will be conducting a full-scale Active Shooter Drill at San Juan County’s Administrative Building, 100 S. Oliver, Aztec, on Wednesday January 29, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
During the drill, the administration building will be closed to the public. In order to safely conduct the drill, north bound S.Oliver Street will be closed to vehicle traffic (south bound will be open). All other county buildings and businesses in the surrounding area will be open to business as usual during the drill. The administration building holds the offices of the County Clerk, County Assessor, and the County Treasurer. We ask the public to plan to conclude their business with those offices by 3:00 p.m., or commence business after the conclusion of the drill at 5:00 p.m.
For purposes of this exercise, the public can expect to see police officers and emergency vehicles staged at the administration building, and emergency responders in full gear in and around the building.
The object of the simulated active shooter drill is to provide emergency personnel and San Juan County employees the best training experience possible to close any gaps in the emergency plans. “If you were ever to find yourself in the middle of an active shooter event, your survival may depend on whether or not you have a plan.” explained Stewart Logan, San Juan County Safety and Compliance Manager. “These exercises help emergency responders and employees prepare for what to do if they ever find themselves in that situation.”
