San Juan County, NM – On August 31, 2012 at approximately 2152 hours San Juan County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the area of the 11 mile marker of NM 574, approximately three miles north of Aztec, NM. Deputies were responding to a shots fired call.
Prior to arriving on-scene, Deputies were advised that one man had been shot and the suspect had fled the scene into the hills north of the area. As it was unknown if the suspect was armed, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was activated. A complete search of the area was conducted by SJC Patrol and SWAT. The suspect was located hiding in a wash approximately 100 yards from the original scene at 2349 hours on the same night.
Two victims were believed to have been injured prior to the arrival of deputies’ on-scene. Victim One (a male) was transported to San Juan Regional medical center with a gunshot wound. He was treated and released later in the evening having sustained a non life threatening wound caused by a shotgun blast. Victim Two (also a male) was not transported having sustained only minor injuries. He was cleared by medical personnel on-scene.
Through interviews and evidence at the scene SJC detectives learned that the suspect had been at the location of the incident earlier in the evening. The suspect had been very agitated and acting aggressive by hitting the walls with a flash light and making threats. The two victims asked the suspect to leave the residence. The suspect left and approximately 15 to 20 minutes later multiple shotgun blasts shattered windows and hit Victim One. Victim Two received minor injuries during the incident from BB’s and broken glass.
The suspect fled into the hills and was located two hours later. Charges are still pending.
