San Juan County, NM - On February 20, 2013 San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 11465 Hwy 550 in reference to a one vehicle rollover. Early reports had indicated that one person was outside of the vehicle and another person was trapped inside.
While deputies were responding they were advised by dispatch that one person had been pronounced deceased (the individual who was still inside the vehicle). Deputies arrived on at 2229 hours. Based on the initial investigation, deputies determined that Claudia Lemus, age 29 of Farmington NM, was the driver of the vehicle. The passenger was determined to be Alberto Arce-Rodriguez, age 20 of Farmington NM.
At the time of the crash the roadway was extremely icy with and it was also snowing. “Lemus was northbound on Hwy 550 and had just negotiated a slight turn in the roadway,” explained San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputy Aeschlimann. “The GMC pickup Lemus was driving lost traction in the back of the vehicle. It crossed the entire roadway, ran off the southbound shoulder, and flipped at least two times before landing on its roof.”
Lemus was pronounced dead at the scene, according to OMI it appears she suffered head trauma as a result of the accident. It does not appear that Lemus was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The passenger, Arce-Rodriguez, was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center where he was treated for mid back pain and a laceration on his head. “At this time it appears that the crash was due to speeds that were too fast for the road conditions,” continued Aeschlimann. The investigation is still ongoing; it is unknown at this time if alcohol is a factor in the crash.
