The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Foundation is collecting donations for the 12th Annual “Shop with YOUR Cop” event, which will take place on Saturday, December 8th, at 7 a.m., at the K Mart, located at 3000 East Main Street in Farmington. The purpose of the program is to brighten the holiday season for San Juan County children who would otherwise receive very little.
Children must live in San Juan County and be recommended for the program by a community service organization within the community. Donations collected for the Shop with YOUR Cop program will provide each participating child with the opportunity to shop with a law enforcement officer.
“The kids are partnered with a deputy or police officer and personally escorted throughout the store.” said San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sandy Wagner. Wagner is the deputy in charge of the program this year. “Each child is given $100 to spend. We ask that they spend $50 on much needed items such as coats, shoes, blankets and then of course they can use the other $50 for some fun items such as toys for Christmas.”
“The smiles the faces of these children and the law enforcement personnel who escort them is reason enough to continue this program. I have participated in this program for years, it is my favorite program. I just love shopping with these kids, they are so grateful,” said Wagner. “We are asking for the communities support to ensure that this program grows and so we can continue to help the children that live within San Juan County.”
Last year the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Foundation partnered with the Sheriff’s Office with this program in order to assist with much needed financial support for the program. The Foundation relies on monetary donations to make this event a success.
The Sheriff’s Office Foundation is a 501c3 comprised of volunteers, with no paid staff. All monies collected through the Foundation are spent on community programs sponsored by the Sheriff’s Office such as “Shop With YOUR Cops”.
The goal this year is to provide for 75 children. Checks should be made payable to the SJCSO Foundation and mailed to: SJCSO Foundation, 211 South Oliver, Aztec, NM 87410.
