Ref: San Juan County SET Arrests Repeat Offender for Possession of 22 Marijuana Plants
San Juan County, NM – On 1/27/2011 the San Juan County Special Enforcement Team (SET) responded to a residence in Aztec at the request of the New Mexico State Probation & Parole Division. State Probation Officers had received an anonymous tip of a possible probation violation in the residence and had asked for officer assistance.
At approximately 1139 hours SET arrived to assist probation officers in questioning Patrick Tafoya age 19 of Aztec. While questioning Tafoya State Probation Officers found a small amount of marijuana in his bedroom. Members of SET quickly secured the residence and obtained a search warrant for marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
“The fact that the State Probation Officers found marijuana in the residence gave us probable cause for the warrant,” explained SET’s Sergeant Shane Ferrari. “We then searched the remainder of the property and found 22 marijuana plants in the garage. They were growing in a makeshift indoor grow room. We also located literature on how to grow marijuana.”
Also during the search, Sheriff’s Detectives located stolen property possibly connected to a residential burglary in the area. “The items stolen in the burglary consisted of approximately $90,000.00 in property taken from a residence,” explained Ferrari. “We had been investigating Tafoya prior to this incident for receiving stolen property. We will now be looking into the items found in his home to see if they tie into the residential burglary.”
Mr. Tafoya was charged with a probation violation, and will be charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute on Monday. Depending the outcome of further investigating he may possibly be charged with receiving stolen property at a later date.
Mr. Tafoya was transported to the San Juan County Detention Center.
