Date: 06/23/2014
San Juan County, NM – On Sunday, June 1st at approximately 7:00 a.m. Aztec Police officers were dispatched to a residence off of Light Plant Road in reference to an armed subject. They responded and learned several crimes had occurred in the county and progressed into the city.

San Juan County Sheriff detectives investigated the case and learned that 21 year-old Cody Mendieta and 24 year-old Aaron Selph, both of Aztec, had been at their residence on County Road 3003. At approximately 2:00 a.m. 24 year-old Jessie Bowman and his girlfriend, 20 year-old Lolita Ortiz, both of Aztec, arrived at the house unannounced. Bowman was angry that Mendieta and Selph’s former roommate owed him money for drugs. He demanded that the two men get him a gaming station to cover the debt.

As the night progressed Bowman struck Selph with the butt of his pistol and repeatedly punched Mendieta in the face. Just after 6:00 a.m. Bowman forced both men into his vehicle. Ortiz drove the men to Mendieta’s parent’s residence in Aztec, while Bowman told them he would kill them if they tried anything.

Once at the Aztec residence Bowman forced Mendieta to go inside the house to retrieve his gaming system. Mendieta was able to motion to his father that something was wrong, at which time the father closed the door on Bowman and got the story out of his son. After learning what had transpired, Mendieta’s father retrieved his pistol and went outside and ordered Bowman to release Selph. After a heated exchange, Selph was released without further incident. Bowman and Ortiz then fled the area.

Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Bowman on the charges of:

• Two Counts of Kidnaping (to inflict death, physical injury or a sexual offense on the victim) (a 1st degree MUG SHOT - BOWMAN, JESSIE DOUGLAS 06-21-14 (2)felony),

• Two Counts of Armed robbery (a 2nd degree felony),

• Two Counts of Kidnaping (to inflict death, physical injury or a sexual offense on the victim) (a 1st degree MUG SHOT - ORTIZ, LOLITA MARIA 06-21-14 (2)felony),
• Two Counts of Conspiracy to Commit Kidnapping (a 2nd degree felony),
• Two Counts of Armed robbery (a 2nd degree felony), and

Both Bowman and Ortiz were located and arrested by Aztec Police officers on June 21st. Both were booked into the San Juan County Detention Center where Bowman is being held on a $221,000 bond while Ortiz is being held on a $180,000 bond.
