San Juan County, NM – On Tuesday, April 1, 2014 detectives with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office were made aware that a 46 year-old Aztec woman had posted alarming information on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page regarding threats from her estranged husband, Steve Saiz.

The Sheriff’s Office is very familiar with 56 year-old Saiz, as he is a former deputy. In March of 2008 Saiz was having marital strife with his estranged wife at that time, and drove by her house and fired rounds into the air. The Bloomfield Police Department investigated the incident and Saiz was arrested for Shooting from a Motor Vehicle. Saiz was terminated from the Sheriff’s Office at that time.

After learning of the information on Facebook, detectives contacted the new estranged wife and learned that Saiz had been calling and sending text messaging for several days. The messages clearly portrayed threats of Saiz killing her, and then himself. Detectives further learned that she had obtained an order of protection against Saiz, but deputies had been unable to locate him for service. SET (Special Enforcement Team) deputies were tasked with conducting surveillance on Saiz’s Bloomfield residence while detectives secured an arrest warrant.

On Wednesday SET deputies observed a car matching Saiz’s pull into the garage, but the door closed before they could confirm the driver’s identity. Detectives then secured a search warrant for the residence. Given Saiz’s prior law enforcement training, his state of mind and the nature of the threats, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team responded to the Bloomfield residence and established a perimeter.

Negotiators were able to establish phone contact with Saiz and utilized de-escalation techniques to calm and convince Saiz to exit and surrender peacefully. Once in custody, Saiz who was highly intoxicated, admitted to deputies he had taken approximately 30 muscle relaxers immediately prior to surrendering. He was transported to the San Juan Region Medical Center where he was admitted.

Saiz was released from the hospital on Thursday, April 10th, at which time deputies transported him to the San Juan County Detention Center where he was booked on his arrest warrant for Aggravated Stalking (a 4th degree felony) and two counts of Use of Telephone to threaten or harass (a misdemeanor). His bond is set at $10,000 cash only.

“It’s sad when anyone gets involved in any DV incident because of their volatile nature,” said Sheriff Ken Christesen. “Mixing that with prescription drugs and alcohol makes for an extremely dangerous situation. We hope this unfortunate circumstance will provide him the opportunity to get the help that he needs.”
