“I am pleased to announce the Promotion of Lieutenant Shane Utley to the rank of Captain, “there are very few individuals who are all truly deserving of this honor,” said Sheriff Ken Christesen. “Shane has worked hard to prepare himself to take on the responsibilities of leadership in the organization.”
Lieutenant Shane Utley is being promoted to the Rank of Captain on January 9, 2011 and will command the Patrol and Support Services Divisions of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. Shane holds several graduate certificates in leadership training including Leadership San Juan (Class of 2005) and the FBI National Academy (Class 242).
“Shane is extremely dedicated and talented. He will bring a whole new level of commitment and performance to the Sheriff’s Office,” continued Christesen, “I look forward to his participation on our management team and the input and ideas I know he will bring to this organization. I congratulate him and look forward to his continued participation and leadership skills he brings to this organization.”
Shane was born in Durango Colorado, and was raised in San Juan County New Mexico, where he graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1988. Shane served six years with the United States Army/New Mexico Army National Guard, leaving at the rank of Sergeant. Shane graduated the Police Academy (BPOT Class 120) in 1991 and joined the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office in 1995.
While at the Sheriff’s Office Shane has worked as a Patrol Deputy, Detective and Patrol Sergeant. As a Deputy, Shane served as a Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T) Team Member, Field Training Officer and Firearms Instructor. As a detective Shane worked a wide verity of cases from burglaries to violent crimes. As a Patrol Sergeant, Shane continued to serve on S.W.A.T as the tactical Team Leader and was also the Team Leader for the Sheriff’s Community Action Team (Off Road Motorcycle program).
Shane was promoted to lieutenant in 2003. As a lieutenant, Shane has served in several different supervisory and leadership roles, including the Support Services supervisor, Agency Homeland Security Coordinator and Patrol Commander. Shane currently serves as the Commander of the S.W.A.T Team, and is a State of New Mexico Certified Firearms and S.W.A.T Instructor.
Shane resides in Bloomfield with his wife, Beth. He has four children:
* Michael, 16, involved in the Bloomfield High School Band
* Katelyn, 13, involved in Bloomfield girls volleyball
* Jessica, 11, involved in Bloomfield Band
* Brodie, 8, involved in Bloomfield football and wrestling
Shane is also a Master Mason and an endowed member of San Juan Lodge #25 in Aztec. In his spare time he enjoys hunting and camping.
