Ref: Kirtland High School Placed On Lockdown Today as A Precaution as Deputies Respond to Report of a Shooting

San Juan County, NM – For the second time in as many days a San Juan County High School was placed on lockdown.
On 9/15/2011 at 1117 hours Deputies and State Police Officers were dispatched to County Road 6100 in Kirtland in reference to a subject having reported being shot. The proximity of the shooting location caused Kirtland High School and Middle School to be placed on immediate lockdown as a precaution.
Upon arriving they found Wallace Slade, age 58, of Kirtland sitting in a pickup in the driveway bleeding from his leg. Mr. Slade stated to law enforcement officials that he had accidentally shot himself while he was inside the residence.
At 1129 hours the lockdown of Kirtland High School and Middle School was lifted however the Sheriff s Office requested students remain on the main campus while the investigation continued. During the course of the investigation it was learned that Mr. Slade was currently serving probation due to a 2010 conviction for residential burglary and larceny of a firearm.
Slade has been taken into custody on a probation hold and other charges are currently pending.
