Homicide Investigation

homicide

6/10/2011

At approximately 11 AM this morning (Friday, 06/10/11) Farmington Police responded to 6100 San Marcos Dr. after a friend of Dr. Jim Nordstrom called to report that he had gone to visit and found that Dr. Nordstrom was not home but there was blood in the house. Officers entered the house and found blood and indications that a violent crime had possibly occurred. They also found that the doctor’s pickup truck was missing. An attempt to locate was broadcast to all surrounding agencies and at approximately 1 PM this afternoon the truck was found and stopped on East Main Street in Farmington by a San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputy and a Farmington Police Officer. A 17 year old male was driving the truck and was the only occupant. He was detained for investigation. It was decided that the case would be investigated by a task force consisting of the Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police. At this time a body has been located buried under a pile of wood outside the residence. He was identified by a neighbor as Dr. Jim Nordstrom (age 57) and will be sent to the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque tomorrow for an autopsy. The cause of death will be determined by OMI but there is evidence of blunt force trauma to the head. We believe at this time that Dr. Nordstrom lived alone and there is no information at this time of any connection between him and the suspect. The residence and surrounding area is being processed as a homicide scene by NMSP and Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigators. The juvenile suspect is in custody and will be charged later tonight. The charges are still being determined as the investigation continues but will probably include an open count of Murder as well as charges related to an unlawful entry of the residence, tampering with evidence and unlawful taking of the truck. His name as well as the affidavits for warrants and criminal complaints will be sent to you all tomorrow after charges have been filed. Feel free to quote me on anything in this release but I will not be answering any questions until tomorrow after I send out an updated release with that information.
