Ref: Fugitive with a $5 Million Warrant Captured in San Juan County NM

Date: July 9, 2011

San Juan County, NM – Peggy Sue Thomas, age 46 was arrested at Navajo Lake at approximately 1600 hours today. A $5 million warrant had been issued for Thomas out of Island County Washington.

Thomas is wanted in the 2003 murder of Russ A. Douglas. Their story was featured on America’s Most Wanted. Investigators say James “Jim” Huden and his mistress, Peggy Sue Thomas, hatched a plot to kill Russ Douglas. On December 26, 2003, police say Huden and Thomas lured Douglas to a remote location and shot him in the head.

Huden was arrested in Guadalajara, Mexico on June 9 in Mexico, and returned to Whidbey Island, Washington to face first-degree murder charges in the killing Douglas in Freeland. Huden’s bail was set at $10 million and his arraignment has been set for
July 11.

Based on testimony and new evidence found in the case by investigators in Washington the $5 million warrant had been issued for Thomas. The warrant was issued approximately one week ago.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the warrant on Thomas and asked to assist last week. “We were contacted by the lead detective, Mark Plumberg, from Island County,” explained Lt. Brice Current. Working on information provided by investigators in Washington, Sheriff’s Office Deputies began researching possible leads and locations.

The US Marshall’s and the San Juan County Special Enforcement Team eventually met with Doug McKim, Park Superintendent of Navajo Lake State Park. “The meeting took place at Navajo Lake and officials were able to check records and found that Thomas had a ½ million house boat and jet skies located on Navajo Lake,” continued Current.

One of the local residents allowed law enforcement to use their boat in order to do surveillance. A ruse was quickly set up in order to capture Thomas. “She was informed that she had a package waiting for her at the visitor’s center on the lake,” explained Current. “She seemed suspicious and it took a few days, but finally this afternoon she went to pick up the “package” and McKim was able to take her into custody.

San Juan County deputies then transported Thomas to the San Juan County Detention Center. “We could not have captured her without the teamwork and assistance of the Special Enforcement Team , the US Marshall’s and Doug McKim,” said Current.
