Deputy Testing Process

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office administers a thorough testing and selection process in its hiring procedure. It is incumbent upon the Sheriff’s Office to make sure only those people with the highest level of integrity are placed in a position of public trust and to ensure the best applicant is chosen for the position of Deputy Sheriff.

The testing procedure consists of the following sections:

 

Work Keys Testing:

As outlined in the supplemental questions section of the on-line application form, to proceed in this recruitment you will be required to complete three tests:    

1. Business Writing (passing score – 3)

2. Listening for Understanding (passing score – 2)

3. Workplace Observation (passing score – 3)

 

PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO TEST.

 Applicants will first need to register as a participant by visiting http://www.jobs.state.nm.us, and then use the on-line scheduler (http://skillstestingnm.schedulething.com) to reserve a testing day, time, and location. Please arrive 15 minutes before your first scheduled assessment.  You will need to bring a photo ID with you.  If you score below the required minimum score indicated above, you will need to wait 24 hours before taking the test again.  Workforce staff can assist you with KeyTrain training if you need assistance with a particular skill area.  If you do not pass all three tests within two attempts, you will be required to wait six months before taking the tests again.

Testing must be completed by Tuesday, June 10, 2014.

Physical Agility:

The physical agility test for entrance into the basic police officer academy is set by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy.  As of December 2013, a new physical standard has been implemented.  This new standard is age and gender neutral, meaning all applicants must pass at the same standard.  Below are the requirements:

  • Aerobic Power: 1.5 Mile Run – 15:20 (minutes:seconds)
  • Anaerobic Power: 300 Meter Run – 65.4 seconds
  • Muscular Endurance: Sit-Ups – 31 Repetitions
  • Upper Body Strength: Push-Ups – 29 Repetitions

Lateral applicants who are currently certified peace officers in the State of New Mexico are exempt from the physical fitness requirement for testing purposes.

Lateral applicants who are currently certified peace officers in any other state must complete an obstacle course in a specific time allotment to continue in the selection process.

 

Panel Interview:

Once an applicant has passed both the written and physical portions of the testing process, he or she is scheduled for an interview. The interview panel will consist of three Sheriff’s Office members and will take approximately one hour.

 

Background Investigation:

Upon successful completion of the panel interview, applicants may be moved forward to the background investigation. An intensive investigation is conducted to ensure the applicant meets the standards and expectations set forth by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

 

 

Medical Exam, Polygraph Examination, Psychological Evaluation:

The medical, polygraph and psychological exam are the final tests before a final offer of employment is made.
