Deputy Involved Shooting

San Juan County, NM – On January 31, 2012 at approximately 2050 hours, San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the area of County Road 3050 in reference to a report of a female subject armed with a handgun making threats to kill family members and herself.

During the course of the investigation a female subject ran out of the house and pointed a handgun at two deputies. Deputies fired several shots striking the woman. The woman was then taken into custody and transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center with a non fatal gunshot wound.

No deputies or other residents of the home were injured. Charges against the female suspect for aggravated assault against a police officer are pending review by the District Attorney’s Office. When charges are officially filed the affidavit and suspects identity will be made available. The investigation is being conducted by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and is still pending.

Both deputies are veteran officers with the Sheriff’s Office and are both on routine paid administrative leave, pending conclusion of a use of force review. This is standard operating procedure for deputy involved shootings.
