San Juan County, NM - On Saturday, June 15, 2013 at approximately 0100 hours, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the Giant convenience store located at 3890 US 64 (Fruitland, NM) in reference to a robbery that had just occurred. Subsequent investigation revealed a woman had gone into the store to purchase cigarettes.

“Due to her young appearance, the clerk made her produce ID to prove her age,” explained Lieutenant Cory Tanner, SJCSO Detectives Division. “As the transaction was being completed, a male entered store and began ‘hugging’ on the female customer. As the female turned to leave, the male shoved the clerk backward and grabbed cash from the register.” Both the male and the female left the store together in a silver passenger car.

Investigators located and interviewed the female. Based on the information learned, in conjunction with the surveillance footage, the male suspect was identified as 28 year-old Kyle Martinez of Farmington, NM. An arrest warrant for the charge of Robbery was obtained with a $10,000 cash only bond. Martinez has not yet been located.

“Martinez has a lengthy, violent criminal history which includes a past armed robbery conviction in a case where he attempted to stab a store clerk,” said Tanner. “He also has a burglary conviction and two convictions for battering a police officer. In addition to these charges, Martinez has a conviction on a sex related offense, in which he went into a strange house, found two young females inside, and proceeded to touch one of them in a sexual manner.”

Based on his history, Martinez should be considered violent and potentially armed. If anyone sees, or has information regarding Martinez’s whereabouts, they are encouraged to call 911 immediately. The public is cautioned not to approach Martinez and asked to call dispatch (911) instead.
