Deputies Respond Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Accident

San Juan County, NM – On 04/10/14, at approximately 2033 hours, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to the area of 4226 US Highway 64.   “Deputies were asked to respond to a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic accident,” explained Sergeant Terry McCoy.

The driver of the vehicle explained that he had struck a female as she was walking across US 64.  “He explained that a truck was in front of him as they were traveling on US 64,” continued McCoy.  “The truck in front of him swerved and missed the pedestrian.  The driver that hit her did not have time to react and struck the female.”

The female pedestrian was identified as 38 year-old Sheila Russell of Kirtland, NM.  Russell was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center.  She was later transferred to a hospital in Denver, CO.  Her condition is unknown at the time of this release.

Preliminary tests show that Russell may have been intoxicated at the time she was struck by the vehicle.  San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Reconstructionists were called to the scene and are currently investigating the incident.
