Deputies Respond to Scene of Accident on US 550, Two Critically Injured

Robert Hohnke passed away today as a result of the injuries he received in this accident. The Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere sympathies to his family during this difficult time, especially during this holiday season.

San Juan County, NM – On 12/04/2011 at approximately 0805 hours, San Juan County deputies were called to the scene of a head on collision located near Huerfano, New Mexico on US Highway 550.

Marcelino Xahuentitla (age 51 of Aztec) had been driving south on US 550 in a tan Chevrolet pickup when he lost control of his vehicle. The roadways were snow packed and icy when Xahuentitla lost control. His vehicle traveled from the southbound lane of traffic into the northbound lanes.

It was traveling in a sideways motion when it collided with a Red Subaru heading north on US 550. The Subaru was driven by Robert Hohnke (age 30 of Albuquerque).

The Subaru sustained the majority of the impact and its passengers received the most injuries. Both Robert Hohnke and one of his passengers, Lauren Buerkkle (age 24 of Albuquerque), were taken to San Juan Regional Center and were listed in critical condition this as of 1400 hours.

Maria Socorro was a passenger in the pickup driven by Xahuentitla, Socorro was also injured in the accident, and she was listed in stable condition as of 1400 hours.

Alcohol was not considered to be a factor in the crash.
