San Juan County, NM – On August 30, 2011 at approximately 0142 hours, San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of the Sheriff’s Office Lee Acres Substation in reference to a stabbing victim requesting assistance. Upon arriving to the area, Deputy J. Yazzie was able to locate a the male victim at the intersection of CR5466 and CR5500.

While Deputy Yazzie was speaking with the victim, a vehicle was leaving the area and the victim identified it as one that had been at the location of where the stabbing occurred. Deputy J. Sanchez who was traveling to the scene was notified by Yazzie about the vehicle and subsequently made a stop on the vehicle and contacted four individuals. One female inside of the vehicle advised that she had been stabbed as well and needed medical treatment. During the course of his interview with the occupants of the vehicle, Deputy Sanchez determined that a male passenger of the vehicle was a possible suspect involved with the stabbing. The suspect was later identified as Sebastian Leonard, 19 of Bloomfield.

Through victim statements and investigation a location was determined as to where the stabbing incident had actually occurred. A perimeter was established around the location and entry was made into the residence to check for other possible injured subjects or further suspects. The house was cleared and the scene was secured and maintained for responding Detectives. Evidence of the incident was found at the residence located on CR5466.

The male victim was transported by ambulance to San Juan Regional Medical Center and treated for his wounds. The female victim (from the vehicle) was also transported to San Juan Regional and treated for her wounds.

San Juan County Detectives Burns and Farni were called in to conduct the investigation. It was determined that the male victim had arrived at the residence on County Road 5466 and was highly intoxicated. A verbal argument ensued between the male victim and Leonard the until the male victim was told to leave. The male victim was being escorted to the door by the female victim when Leonard began stabbing the male suspect and inadvertently stabbed the female suspect. Leonard proceeded to stab the male suspect approximately 10 times before he was subdued and the male victim left the premises and called 911.

Leonard gave a full confession was arrested and booked into the San Juan County Detention Center on Aggravated Battery and Tampering with Evidence.
