San Juan County, NM – On August 7, 2013 at approximately 1936 hours, San Juan County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle roll-over accident. The incident was reported to have occurred on County Road 5068. Upon arrival, deputies observed a male subject in the tree line near the crash. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of trauma from the crash. The victim was later identified as Larry Bell, age 23 of Bloomfield, NM.
While on-scene, Deputies made contact with a male subject walking down the road, who appeared to be injured. He identified himself as Anthony Schmitz, age 20 of Bloomfield. Schmitz admitted to being the driver of the vehicle. “He stated he was responsible for the crash,” explained San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Terry McCoy. “Schmitz said he had had been ‘messing around and spinning out’ on the road. He then lost control of the vehicle.”
Upon speaking to Schmitz, deputies suspected that he may have drinking alcohol. After completing a field sobriety test, Schmitz was placed under arrest for Great Bodily Injury. Schmitz was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center (SJRMC), where he consented to a blood draw to determine his blood alcohol concentration. While at SJRMC, he was evaluated by medical staff and released.
Schmitz was then booked into the San Juan County Adult Detention Center for Great Bodily Injury and Reckless Driving.
