On Tuesday (1/15/2013) at approximately 6:50 pm deputies were dispatched to County Road 5285 in Bloomfield, NM in reference to reports of a man being stabbed and run over. Subsequent investigation revealed that a 12 year old boy and his siblings relayed to their paternal grandparents that they felt the 12 year old boy was being physically abused by their mother’s boyfriend. In response to this, the 54 year old grandfather, Kenneth Johnson of Bloomfield, NM responded to the boys’ residence and parked down the road.

The boyfriend in question, 27 year old Richard Lopez of Blanco, NM saw the vehicle parked down the road for an extended period of time. He decided to drive down to see if the occupants needed help. As Lopez arrived at Johnson’s truck, Johnson accelerated at him. Lopez took evasive action in his vehicle and narrowly avoided a collision. Johnson immediately approached his driver door and asked if he was Lopez. Upon confirming he was, Johnson told him he was going to kill him. At that point Lopez attempted to speed away but his tires spun out in the snow and he slid into a small ditch. He then exited the passenger door where Johnson intercepted him and began to stab him.

Lopez’s girlfriend (the mother of the children in question) heard the commotion outside and ran out and assisted in pulling Johnson off Lopez. Johnson then got into his truck, drove down the road and turned around. He then accelerated at the couple and struck Lopez, knocking him into a nearby fence. Johnson attempted to strike Lopez a second time with his vehicle before finally fleeing from the scene.

Lopez was taken to the San Juan Regional Hospital with at least one stab wound to his abdomen and numerous cuts to his hands. Johnson was later intercepted by Bloomfield Police officer. He was also taken to the hospital for breathing difficulties.

Johnson, KennethJohnson has since been arrested for 2 counts of Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, 2 counts of Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony Criminal damage to property. He is currently being held at the San Juan County detention center on a $35,000 bond.

An investigation into the allegations of child abuse by Lopez revealed no evidence to support the claims.
