Deputies Respond to a Double Fatal Accident on US 550


Date: 09/02/2012, 1425 hours

San Juan County, NM – On September 2, 2012 at approximately 948 hours San Juan County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the area of the 166 mile marker of US 550, north of Aztec, NM. Deputies were responding to a call about an accident involving a vehicle and a motorcycle.

Upon arriving on-scene deputies determined that three motorcycles were traveling southbound on US 550 when a SUV type vehicle pulled out of County Road 2755 onto US 550 in front of them. All three motorcycles were being driving by males.

The first of the motorcycles was able to swerve and avoid colliding with the vehicle. The second motorcycle was unable to avoid the vehicle and collided with the back-end. The third motorcycle also collided with the vehicle.

The driver of the second motorcycle received fatal injuries as a result of the accident, as did the 78-year-old male driver of the SUV. The driver of the third motorcycle received minor injuries and was treated by medical personnel at the scene. A female passenger in the SUV also received minor injuries and was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center.

US 550 is open, however it is limited to one lane of traffic for about ¼ of a mile near the 166 mile marker both directions of traffic. Traffic does appear to be moving at a normal pace. The lanes will be limited to one lane of traffic until approximately 1500 hours today as traffic reconstructionists work on the scene and crews also work to clear the scene of the vehicles involved.

At this time names of the victims are being withheld until next of kin are notified.

  • The driver of the SUV has been identified as 78-year-old David Hutchison of Aztec, NM.
  • The driver of the second motorcycle (who was killed in the accident) has been identified as 43-year-old Michael Shockley of Louisiana.
