San Juan County, NM - On Saturday, June 1, 2013, San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to an area near the “Hilltop Mustang” on US 550 for a report of a one vehicle crash” involving a roll-over”. As deputies approached the location they learned the vehicle was actually further south, near the 138 mile marker, on the west side of US 550. While en-route, Deputies were informed that a male occupant had been ejected from the vehicle.
Emergency vehicles were able to determine that male was the only occupant of the vehicle when it crashed and that no other vehicles were involved. Prior to any law enforcement arriving, the male was taken by helicopter to San Juan Regional Medical Center for treatment. The male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the emergency room. He was identified as Lionel Barlowe, age 30, of Farmington, NM.
While San Juan County Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the crash, alcohol is believed to be the contributing factor.
This is the second fatal accident that SJC Sheriff’s Office has responded to this year. The first was on February 20, 2013. While that accident also occurred US 550, alcohol was not a factor in that incident. That accident, in which Claudia Lemus, age 29, of Farmington NM was killed, was caused by icy road conditions.
