A 100% federally funded FLIR 8500 stabilized thermal imager and low-light camera was installed on N917SJ. This gives us the ability to lock onto and track the thermal signature of buildings, people, and vehicles, whether moving or stationary. The thermal imager works during day and night and can detect the body heat of people through dense foliage, allowing us to quickly locate lost people, or fugitives. SWAT teams from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, Farmington Police Department, Durango Police Department, and La Plata County Sheriff's Office attended classroom and flight training in airborne use-of-force. During the training SWAT officers are taught to shoot at targets using an AR-15 rifle from the back seat of the aircraft while in forward flight, and while at a hover. In addition, we ferried SWAT snipers to the top of a 900 foot cliff where they were able to conduct high angle shooting training. All training was conducted in remote areas.
This was the first time that we had flown two aircraft simultaneously, and the first time our unit had flown in formation.
