San Juan County, NM –Around 1030 hours today San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Deputies received a tip that Byron Boyd was hiding in a residence on County Road 2900 near Aztec NM. Boyd, age 39 from Aztec NM is wanted for a probation violation and is a registered sex offender. The Sheriff’s Department had been notified by Probation and Parole last week that Boyd had somehow managed to cut off his ankle monitor.
After receiving the tip this morning, Deputies verified that Boyd was at the residence. They learned that he had barricaded himself inside a shop near the residence. The shop is a 30’ by 50’ outbuilding made of cinder blocks. “We were told that the suspect was armed and had made threats to shoot any law enforcement personnel who came near him,” said Sergeant Steve Jackson. “We set up a perimeter and called out SWAT.”
“While we were getting into position we heard three rounds come from the inside of the shop,” said Jackson. “At least one of those rounds we could tell was directed towards a member of our SWAT personnel. No one was hit by any of the rounds.” Sheriff’s deputies on-scene have established communication with Boyd and negotiations are currently in progress. As a precaution the Sheriff’s Office has set up a perimeter and closed traffic from the 11 mile marker on County Road 2900 to US Highway 5500.
“We also know that Boyd has emptied three propane tanks inside the shop that he is in, we are not sure why at this time,” said Jackson. At approximately 1245 hours another shot was fired at deputies, again no one was hit or injured by that shot.

After deputies did breach the door Boyd did fire two more rounds at Sheriff’s deputies through the door and a window. No one was injured as a result of these gun shots. A strong odor of gas can be smelled coming from the building. Deputies are unsure if this is a result of the propane tanks Boyd was known to have opened earlier in the afternoon or another source. SWAT mechanical robot is currently being sent into the building to assess the situation inside.

San Juan County, NM –Around 1745 hours San Juan County Sheriff’s deputies completed a search of the shop where Byron Boyd had barricaded himself. Deputies used the SWAT mechanical robot to search the building. The robot was used after deputies managed to breach the door of the cinder block building that Boyd had barricaded himself in. Boyd had fired rounds at Sheriff’s deputies during the incident.
San Juan County Sheriff’s deputies did fire pepper spray into the building and one return round that was believed to have hit a security window and not the suspect. Through the camera on the robot deputies were able to determine that the suspect was down and entered the building.
The suspect was found deceased as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. “No pain or situation is worth taking your own life over,” said Sheriff Ken Christesen. “This is a tragedy for everyone, for his family, for us. There is nothing worth ending your life over; it’s just a terrible situation for all involved.”
Detectives have notified Boyd’s next of kin and will continue to investigate the case and charges may be filed against the individual who assisted harboring Boyle from authorities.
