San Juan County, NM – On 12/15/2011, at approximately 1700 hrs, the Bloomfield Police Department was called to US 550 near the bridge just to the south of Bloomfield New Mexico. The call came in as a report that a man had a gun to his head and was walking north into Bloomfield on US 550.

Bloomfield Police Officer Chad Herrera and Josh Calder responded to the scene. “Upon arriving on scene we located the individual walking on the northbound sidewalk of US 550”, explained Officer Herrera. “When the suspect saw our patrol car he pulled out a gun and put it to his head. He also began yelling, although we could not understand what he was saying. The suspect was carrying a container of alcohol in his other hand.”

The officers pulled their patrol over and began negotiations with the suspect. The suspect began crossing the median of US 550 several times and at one point threw the container of alcohol off of the side of the road.

During the incident San Juan County SWAT and the San Juan County Bearcat were called to the scene. “We closed traffic on Sullivan Road in both directions and traffic was also diverted on US 550 while we dealt with the suspect,” explained Herrera.

During the incident the suspect continued to yell at officers on scene. “He kept telling us to shoot him,” said Herrera. “He also pointed his weapon at me, Officer Calder and other officers who had responded to the scene.

At one point when the suspect pointed the weapon at Herrera and Calder, Officer Calder shot at the suspect twice. The suspect was not hit or injured as a result of these shots being fired.

Negations continued for some time with the suspect continuing to hold onto the gun. At around 1800 hours the suspect stated that he wanted to speak to Officer Herrera. “I was able to talk to the suspect and get him to place his gun down in the middle of the median of US 550,” explained Herrera. “He surrendered then and the San Juan County Sheriff’s SWAT Team took him into custody.”

The suspect was identified as Kevin Ross age 40 of Bloomfield NM. He is being booked into the San Juan County Detention Center and charged with multiple counts of aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.
