San Juan County, NM –On July 9, 2014 at approximately 1247 hours, San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to #14 CR 3959, in reference to Joseph Untalan, who was reported to be acting crazy and having an active felony warrant.  It was reported that Joseph was possibly under the influence of an illegal drug as well.  Responding deputies knew Mr. Untalan from previous calls where he had been armed with knives.  Upon their arrival, Sergeant Wilcox observed Mr. Untalan on the front porch, and then enters the mobile home.

Deputy Mangan attempted to get Mr. Untalan to come to the front door when a family member who was in a camp trailer on the property advised that Joseph was the only one in the mobile home.  Due to Mr. Untalan having a felony warrant and past contacts being armed, San Juan County Sheriff’s Swat Team was called to the scene.

The Swat Team Negotiator arrived at approximately 1400 hours and immediately attempted to make contact with Mr. Untalan.  After approximately 2 hours of no contact with Mr. Untalan, Detectives obtained a search warrant for the property and utilities were shut off to the residence.

Contact with Mr. Untalan was still not made by 1555 hours; the Sheriff’s Office Swat Team made limited entrance into the residence and deployed a camera equipped robot.  The robot cleared the residence and found a shut door to the master bedroom.  Swat Team Members secured the rest of the residence and a negotiator continued to attempt contact.

When no contact was made with Mr. Untalan, entry was into the master bedroom.  Mr. Untalan was located hiding behind a false wall in the closet.  Negotiators were able to coax Mr. Untalan out of the closet and he was subsequently taken into custody without incident.
