About San Juan County

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is located at 211 S. Oliver Drive, Aztec, NM. The “tri-city” area is comprised of Farmington (pop. 46,000), Aztec (pop. 6,985), and Bloomfield (pop. 6,500). All three cities are a 10-15 minute drive from one another.

Located in the heart of the four corners, San Juan County, New Mexico, is surrounded by cultural treasures and tranquil desert landscapes. The county is at the union of three rivers—San Juan, Animas, and La Plata. It is home to Navajo Lake, and has a beautiful view of the San Juan Mountains, visible fifty miles away across the state line in Colorado.

Visitors and residents alike participate in golfing, camping, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, hot air ballooning, year-round tennis, team sports, mountain biking, and walking along the river banks in all seasons.

If you are planning on staying in the area for a few days, you may want to take the time to drive to a few local destinations. Durango, Colorado is an hour drive from Farmington and one of the most popular places for locals to go. It is at the foot of the La Plata Mountains, surrounded by pine trees and hills. Durango is famous for the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad www.durangotrain.com which does daily trips to the mining town of Silverton during summer months.

If fishing is something you enjoy, San Juan River Quality Waters may be a place to visit. Quality Waters is famous for world-class fly fishing and draws people from all over the world. Quality Waters is located at the base of the Navajo Dam Reservoir, a local’s getaway for boating, fishing, and swimming. The Farmington area has several Native American ruins that draw many tourists each year. Mesa Verde, Aztec Ruins, and Chaco Canyon are three such local ruins. If golf is something you enjoy, stay in Farmington and visit Pinon Hills Golf Course, rated #4 in the nation for a municipal golf course www.pinonhillsgolf.com.
