San Juan County, NM – This afternoon San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Daniel Luna, age 37, of Farmington New Mexico. Luna was arrested based on an incident that occurred in the early evening of August 31, 2012 when deputies were dispatched a shots fired call in the area of the 11 mile marker of NM 574, three miles north of Aztec, NM.
Prior to arriving on-scene, Deputies were advised that one man had been shot and the suspect had fled the scene into the hills north of the area. As it was unknown if the suspect was armed, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was activated. A complete search of the area was conducted by SJC Patrol and SWAT. The suspect, identified as Luna, was located hiding in a wash approximately 100 yards from the original scene at 2349 hours on the same night. Two victims were injured prior to the arrival of deputies’ on-scene. Seth Herring, age 25 of Aztec NM, was transported to San Juan Regional medical center with a gunshot wound. He was treated and released later in the evening having sustained a non life threatening wound caused by a shotgun blast. Brandon Carlson, age 23 of Aztec NM, was not transported having sustained only minor injuries. He was cleared by medical personnel on-scene. Both Herring and Carlson live at the residence were the incident occurred. Carlson is believed to be the half-brother of Luna.
Luna fled into the hills soon after the incident and was located two hours later. Luna was later transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center for an unrelated medical condition. He was released from the hospital today and taken into custody by San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies.
Luna was charged with: one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling (2nd degree felony), one count of aggravated batter with a deadly weapon (3rd degree felony), and one count of negligent use of a deadly weapon (petty misdemeanor).
