V.I.P. Volunteer Dalene Reese

Volunteering is sharing your Blessings and your soul.

It is sharing the wealth of your experiences and your wisdom, and is more rewarding if those receiving your gift are needy in some way. It is also much more gratifying to me to do it anonymously. I don’t expect anything in return. I’m Thankful I can do it. I wish more would join me.

Foundation Continued…

The programs funded by the Foundation touch the lives of many, from young to old. The Foundation partners with community programs such as Court Watch, Neighborhood Watch, Women Against Crime, Explorers, Shop with Your Cops, and many more.

The Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. It is managed by a Board of Directors (the Board) of local citizens. All who serve are volunteers, and the Board is governed by By-Laws set forth in July, 2011. The Board is responsible for all aspects of the Foundation, to include making the determination for the distribution of funds, goods or services.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Foundation is to support the Sheriff’s Office, its Community Policing efforts and the Volunteers In Partnership Program by raising community awareness and helping to provide programs, equipment, and training that enhance the Sheriff’s Office ability to better serve the community.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Foundation provides an opportunity for the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office to build stronger relationships between the agency and the citizens it serves. The Foundation is the only organization authorized to raise funds on behalf of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. We invite you to “Become a Partner Today” as we continue to make a difference in our community!

Volunteers In Partnership Continued…

The V.I.P. program allows its volunteers to play a vital role in the Sheriff’s vision of Result Oriented Policing. Through the V.I.P. Program the Sheriff’s Office is able to engage the community in an active problem-solving partnership.

V.I.P. participants will assist in tasks at the three Sheriff Office locations as well as provide assistance outside of the office and throughout the county. This will enable the Sheriff’s Office to provide additional community services.

Special Enforcement Team….

Mission Statement

This unit will identify, arrest, and successfully prosecute recidivists currently active and operating within the San Juan County Area through coordinating operations with local agencies, citizens, Crime Stoppers, federal agencies, and local informants. As a unit, a large emphasis will be placed on targeting repeat offenders, the identification and dismantling of criminal groups committing multiple felonies on a weekly basis. Quality of life for the citizens of San Juan County will also be a priority as lower level criminals will be sought out and prosecuted. The concept of this unit will revolve around “results oriented policing.”

Since its inception in January of 2011 the Special Enforcement Team has accomplished the following:

  • Felony Arrests: 325
  • Misdemeanor Arrests: 178
  • Traffic Citations: 126
  • Non Traffic Citations : 85
  • Cash Seizure: $ 21,872
  • Drug Seizure: 187.2 ounces + 76 live plants
  • Sex Offender Validations: 327
  • Probation Violations: 12
  • Major Case Contributions: 30
  • Search Warrants: 28

Safety Tips….

  • When you are not at home all doors and windows should be locked.
  • Do not keep expensive jewelry out in the open. Hide it in area where burglars would not expect to find it. IE: Shoe box in the linen closet.
  • Bag all of your trash so burglars cannot predict what may be in the home.
  • When you leave on vacation stop ALL mail and newspaper deliveries, so that burglars do not see them piled up and know you are out of town.
  • Check window and door locks to make sure they are in good condition. With colder weather already here, wooden doors and windows will shrink and locks may not fit as good as they did during the summer months.
  • Keep serial numbers documented for any electrical devices. For jewelry take a digital photo and print it out. Store these documents in a safe place. These pieces of information can make it easier for law enforcement recover stole property.
  • If you are at home during the day time keep an extra eye out on your neighborhood. Immediately report any suspicious persons you see around the area.
  • When in doubt call dispatch at the numbers listed below. Law enforcement officials are trained to sort through the details and make a decision about the presence of a person in your neighborhood.

Message From the Sheriff….

This past year, my staff and I have continued to work hard to bring quality services to the San Juan County. We have been efficient, effective and always mindful of those whom we serve. We focus daily on improving the safety of our community through programs such as our Special Enforcement Team and Court Watch (to be implemented in a few months).

We continue to focus on repeat offenders within San Juan County and our efforts to keep them off the streets and incarcerated where they belong. We are also focusing on DWI’s along US 550 in an effort to curb the number of accidents that have been recently reported there.

We have served our community through our newly implemented Volunteers In Partnership Program. This includes sixteen units such as Reserve Deputies, Court Watch, Victim Services, Administrative Services and many more. We have been there with you during County celebrations and community events such as the San Juan County Fair, Neighborhood Watch meetings and our annual Shop With YOUR Cops event.

As we come to the end of a very productive year, I am thankful for the dedication of my staff in delivering quality services to San Juan County . I thank you, the citizens and residents of San Juan County , for your continued support of me and the Sheriff’s Office. I am grateful for all you do to make our jobs easier. Finally, and most importantly, I give thanks for my family, who continue to stand by me as I serve San Juan County .

May you and your family experience the best this season has to offer.

With Warmest Regards,

Ken Christesen, Sheriff
